#GIRLBOSS A Must Read Book For All Girls

For the last few years I’ve had friends recommend the book #GIRLBOSS over and over again. I bought the book and it’s been sitting in my Amazon account for awhile. After a year with very little reading done, I decided to pick up my Kindle again this Summer and get caught up. Unfortunately this thing called “being 30+ weeks pregnant and exhausted” hit and it took me forever to read a few pages.

#GIRLLBOSS

This Fall I picked back up my Kindle and decided to dig back into #GIRLBOSS. Knowing the very basics of the book, I didn’t expect it to change so much of my perspective on my every day job. I love my job and I (honestly) missed some of the every day crazy while I was on maternity leave. Yes, during the Holiday crazy I’ve had to remind myself of that a few times…ha! #GIRLBOSS opened up my eyes a little bit more and even has helped me in a few ways.

Let’s dig in.

#GIRLBOSS Overview

(From Amazon)

#GIRLBOSS includes Sophia’s story, yet is infinitely bigger than Sophia. It’s deeply personal yet universal. Filled with brazen wake-up calls (“You are not a special snowflake”), cunning and frank observations (“Failure is your invention”), and behind-the-scenes stories from Nasty Gal’s meteoric rise, #GIRLBOSS covers a lot of ground. It proves that being successful isn’t about how popular you were in high school or where you went to college (if you went to college). Rather, success is about trusting your instincts and following your gut, knowing which rules to follow and which to break.

A #GIRLBOSS takes her life seriously without taking herself too seriously. She takes chances and takes responsibility on her own terms. She knows when to throw punches and when to roll with them. When to button up and when to let her freak flag fly.

As Sophia writes, “I have three pieces of advice I want you to remember: Don’t ever grow up. Don’t become a bore. Don’t let The Man get to you. OK? Cool. Then let’s do this.”

#GIRLBOSS Thoughts

I loved this book more than I expected to. Going into it, I expected to enjoy it just because people said I would. I had no idea how much it would follow along with various parts of my professional life. Call me naive for not realizing that, but by the end of it I was trying to convince everyone in my department to read it.

Sophia Amoruso not only tells the story of Nasty Gal but she also throws in her tidbits and recommendations on how to be successful as an employee AND a boss. Some of the stories she told amazed me that people even thought that way… others seemed like no brainers. Overall the book was packed full of interesting stories both good and bad as she grew her company.

After finishing the book I still feel as strongly as I did mid-way through the book that every girl should read it. It doesn’t matter what industry you are in, Sophia Amoruso offers advice that should be heard. Do I agree with every single thing she said? No. Do I think she made a lot of valid points? Absoltely.

Overall the book is one of my top favorites and I look forward to her Netflix series based off of the book that comes out next year.

There was also a little bit of interesting timing. I had mentioned to my boss how much I loved the book and around the time I was nearing the end she sent me an article saying that Nasty Gal filed for bankruptcy the day before. I’ve been trying to follow the details of everything going on, but it still doesn’t change my feelings about the book. Her advice was great and the story was entertaining.
