Gluten-Free Tips For Beginners

Looking back on our gluten-free journey, there are countless things I wish I had known from the beginning. Transitioning to a gluten-free lifestyle meant more than swapping out the bread in my pantry—it required a complete overhaul of how I approached food, cooking, and even social situations.

At first, the experience was overwhelming. I spent more time than I’d like to admit crying in the grocery store, feeling lost and unsure of what to do next. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. That’s why I’ve compiled these tips for gluten-free beginners to make your transition smoother and, hopefully, less stressful.

Gluten-Free Meal Plan For Beginners

1. Build a Positive Support System

Having someone to lean on who has been through the same journey can make a world of difference. However, this person must approach the gluten-free lifestyle from a positive perspective.

Early in my journey, I reached out to a gluten-free friend, but her constant focus on the negatives made me feel even more overwhelmed. I was convinced I would never find bread that was less than $10 again. Spoiler alert: I did.

Instead, find someone who celebrates the wins of being gluten-free, like improved health and discovering new favorite meals. This kind of encouragement will keep you motivated and focused on the benefits.

Once I found my gluten-free community, my overwhelm began to slow down. However, that is the number one reason I became a gluten-free coach: to build a community that helps others avoid being overwhelmed.

2. Don’t Shy Away From Naturally Gluten-Free Foods

When starting out, it’s easy to get caught up in the gluten-free section of the grocery store, where you’ll find an array of processed snacks and substitutes… that may or may not have any flavor in them.  While those items have their place, don’t overlook naturally gluten-free foods, like fruits, vegetables, meats, beans, and plain yogurts.

Planning meals around these options is more affordable and simplifies the process. For example, a roasted chicken, steamed veggies, and rice dinner is naturally gluten-free and a breeze to prepare.

Our meal plan each week is built around naturally gluten-free foods. Whether it’s tacos using corn shells and homemade seasonings or meatloaf using gluten-free bread crumbs… the base of every meal starts out with a naturally gluten-free option.

3. Be Prepared to Shop at Multiple Stores

One surprising challenge of going gluten-free is finding all the items you need. Many local grocery stores have limited gluten-free selections, and you might have to take trips to several stores to complete your shopping list. I quickly realized that my neighborhood store only carried two types of gluten-free crackers that cost a small fortune: rice cakes and, on occasion, a loaf of gluten-free bread.

There were lots of tears.

Don’t get discouraged—you’ll learn which stores carry your favorite items over time. One of my biggest tips for gluten-free beginners is not to hesitate to use online stores like Amazon Subscribe and Save, or Thrive Market. We use both of them to stock up on items we need in bulk each month and limit our trips to the grocery store for those items that are naturally gluten-free.

4. Pinterest Might Do More Harm Than Good… At First

Pinterest can be an incredible resource, but it can also be a double-edged sword. Searching for gluten-free recipes without a clear plan can leave you feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of options. Yes, there are plenty of options on Pinterest for gluten-free recipes, but if you don’t have a specific meal in mind, you might find yourself quickly closing the app.

Instead, decide on a specific meal or type of food you want to make—like “gluten-free chili”—and narrow your search from there. By limiting what you’re searching for, you are more likely to find a gluten-free recipe that is perfect for your weekly meal plan.

Not to mention, at least one out of ten Pinterest recipes is bound to be a #PinterestFail. Those are the recipes where we laugh and quickly throw a gluten-free pizza in the oven.

5. Start Meal Planning

It may be number 5 here, but out of all the tips for gluten-free beginners, it is to have a plan.

Meal planning is essential when transitioning to a gluten-free diet. Without a plan, it’s easy to feel unprepared and tempted to stray from your new lifestyle. Every time you eat gluten, your body slows the healing process down. A meal plan can prevent that and help you get more comfortable with a gluten-free lifestyle.

It wasn’t until I figured out my meal-planning routine that we could easily maintain a gluten-free household without complaints. Until then, there were many nights that I was cooking two dinners and often found that the gluten-free dinners consisted of toast or crackers.

6. Ask Questions Without Hesitation

Being gluten-free often stems from a medical necessity, so it’s important to prioritize your health by asking questions. At first, it might feel a bit awkward, but the more you practice asking the questions, the more confident you will be.

Don’t hesitate to ask whether you’re dining out, attending a social event, or unsure about a product. I’ve learned so much by simply asking questions, and it has helped me stay on track and feel more confident.

Some questions to ask are:

  1. Do you offer a separate gluten-free option (if not on the menu)
  2. Is this prepared in a dedicated gluten-free space?
  3. Are all of the ingredients in this dish gluten-free?
  4. Do you have dedicated gluten-free appliances, dishes & utensils (deep fryers, pots, pans, spatulas, etc)

Your health matters. As a reminder, every time you go back and eat gluten, you’re setting back the healing process of your gut. Do not hesitate to ask questions. If people are unwilling to answer, they are not worth your time and money.

Transitioning to a gluten-free lifestyle is a journey, not a sprint. While the initial steps may feel overwhelming, these tips for gluten-free beginners can help you confidently navigate the process. Remember to lean on a positive support system, embrace naturally gluten-free foods, plan your meals, and never be afraid to ask questions.
